Endodontics is the field of dentistry that deals with the treatment and restoration of damaged/infected pulp. Pulp is the third and innermost layer of a natural tooth. It is also the most sensitive one because it contains nerve ending and blood vessels that keep the tooth healthy. It can become damaged and infected in case of untreated caries, or due to trauma and fractures. In such cases, a simple filling is not enough to save the tooth – special endodontic treatments, such as root canals are required to restore the tooth.

During a root canal, the damaged portion of the tooth is first removed. The pulp chambers are then accessed. Special endodontic instruments are used to remove all the pulp from the canals, shaping the canals during the process. These thin canals are then disinfected, dried, and finally filled with inert restorative materials. A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment, must be fitted with a crown after the procedure has been completed. This strengthens the damaged tooth, and protects it from further damage. If you have a tooth that has been aching for a long time, you may need a root canal – call now to book an appointment with the team at Green Oaks Dental.
